I think there is nothing more exciting for a painter than a blank canvas. That perfect surface that waits for you to create. If you want to create a good painting, you need a perfect base to put it on.
Always purchase the best canvas that you can afford since the durability of your painting depends on it and I am sure each and everyone of you will agree with me that we all want our work to last no matter if you are a professional artist or just a hobbyist.
Many painters prefer priming the canvas by themselves, but there are many good canvases on offer nowadays that are already stretched and prepared for work.
Purchasing already primed canvas saves you a lot of time and also primed canvas is a great option for beginners and students.
The manufacturer I value greatly when it comes to the art materials in medium price range is Winsor and Newton. In this review I decided to describe to you in detail Winsor and Newton canvas.
Winsor And Newton
Winsor and Newton is a British company with long tradition and experience in manufacturing art tools and materials.
Over the years, they perfected most of their products and are offering them to artists at a reasonable price.
At Winsor and Newton, you can purchase professional and classic canvas. Professional has Cotton Traditional, Linen Traditional and Cotton Deep Edge and classic has Cotton Traditional and Cotton Deep Edge.
Linen canvas is considered the best since the fabric is very durable and has a great surface to paint on but it is also very expensive so there is also cotton canvas which is not of that good quality as linen canvas but still provides a solid painting surface at much lower price.
My advice to you is to buy the best you can since it is very important to make your work last. Canvas is the most popular support for painting since the paint binds well to it and its very portable and lightweight.
Also, different types of canvas give you a different texture to paint on depending on the surface of the canvas and the way it is woven.
For more precise work you will need a smoother surface, while the rougher surface can be used for more textured work.
Winsor And Newton Professional Linen Canvas
Linen canvas was and always will be my preferred painting surface. It is a bit expensive when you compare it to the cotton canvas, but it offers you better quality and durability.
Winsor and Newton offers you stretched linen canvas in a few various sizes 8″ x 10″,10″ x 10″, 9″ x 12″, 12″ x 12″, 11″ x 14″,12″ x 16″, 16″ x 20″, 18″ x 24″, 24″ x 30″, 24″ x 36″, 30″ x 40″ and 36″ x 36″.
It is up to you to choose the size that suits you the best. Professional linen canvas made by Winsor and Newton is very nicely stretched, and the canvas itself is of an excellent quality.
It is made to the highest quality standards out of 100% linen cloth and medium grain surface. Winsor and Newton’s professional linen canvas is stretched by hand and back stapled with tailored corners.
Frame that the canvas is stretched on is made of kiln-dried heavy duty pine stretcher bars that are rigorously tested to ensure that there is no wrapping due to moisture.
In case that you are not satisfied with the tightness of your canvas, you can always additionally stretch it since with the canvas you get the Pro Stretcher devices for easier stretching.
They are very easy to use, and it will not take you a lot of time I included a video with the instructions above in case you need some instructions tho it is easy to figure out how to use it by yourself.
Highly pigmented gesso primmer was used to ensure high coverage and color performance. It prevents sinking of oil color and improves adhesion.
Canvas is made from the fibers of the flax plant that is harvested in Western Europe. The warp and the weft threads weigh the same. This is good since it means that the canvas is less prone to contraction or expansion due to moisture.
We can all agree that this is a very important thing when it comes to canvas since im sure that none of us want their work to be ruined because of the poor quality of their painting surface.
Winsor and Newton Linen canvas can be used with oil, acrylic and alkyd paints. Surface of linen canvas has a more natural look than one of the cotton canvas. Canvas is stapled to the frame on the back so you can paint on the sides of it as well in case you want to leave your painting unframed.
Price of Winsor and Newton canvas might seem a bit high to you once you compare it to the price of the cotton canvas, but as I said, buy the best you can afford in order to make your artwork last.
- Canvas material – 100% Linen
- Wood used for the frame – Pine
- Canvas bar shape – raised edge
- Canvas weight – 430gsm
- Canvas profile depth – 0.82″
This is a good product that will not let you down. Canvas and the frame are both of decent quality and are a bargain for the price. You will have no issues with canvas getting loose due to moisture or the frame twisting.
Surface of the canvas is nicely primed and there are no grains or little knots which can be very annoying while you are painting.
Alos, if you feel that the surface is not stretched enough or to your liking you can always fix that using the pro stretcher you will get with your canvas upon purchase.
